Colin Wollerman - Sapele breakfast bar Empty
PostSubject: Colin Wollerman - Sapele breakfast bar   Colin Wollerman - Sapele breakfast bar EmptyMarch 19th 2009, 7:48 am

This thread was originally posted on SMC by Colin Wollerman. It is here with his permission.

I came across a 11+" x 13' sapele plank at the local hardwood supplier.
The owner had already ran it through the planner so I decided to make a breakfast bar with it.

I cut it in half then...

used a basic EZ set up to square the sides

I then used my home grown SRK plane the edges for glue up. This worked better than I thought it would...

Ready to glue & screw in just a few min. I used pocket screws on the under side with tie-bond II.

After a little sanding I turned my SRK into a trammel for the arc. Round-over, a little more sanding, 5 coats of lacquer(should have used grain filler but I am happy with the results) Start to finish in less than a day.

I was pleasantly surprised with the glue-up edge quality I was able to achieve with relative ease. The grain pattern is the ONLY give away that this is a laminated top.

A couple more shots...

Fantastic. Sapelle makes me drool!

How long was the arm on that trammel? That looks like a 20ft diameter!

Nice job

Absolutely beautiful. I am just starting to use the EZ system.

Be careful, Dino will "call you out" on that Yellow Barracuda in the background of one of your pictures.

Colin Wollerman Replied:

Shaun, Trammel was about 15'! Piece of flat bar bolted to a 80/20 extrusion. The other end is loose bolted to the top of my router table.
Took about 10 min to align everything.

Scott, Actually, look close, that's an EZ repeater rigged to the MS wing as an adjustable flip stopColin Wollerman - Sapele breakfast bar Smile Works great!

I have never heard Dino suggest anyone not use any type or brand of tool only that he offers a safer, EZ'r system.

My yellow tools have performed well but creativity abounds with my EZ stuff. I had a lot of fun working this out.

Thanks for the compliments/comments

Not the brand

I was not commenting about the brand, I was commenting that it was a "table saw".
As you may know he would like to see people using the "deadwood concept".

Still very beautiful work.

Colin Wollerman Replied:

I know you weren't slammin DW I was just making a general statement.
I don't have a PBB (yet) so I use my EZ rig for most cuts over 20" and that little TS for the more manageable pieces.
That BTW has been a great little TS. very smooth and straight cuts.

I will say this though;
I was working some long hours and when I got tired I caught myself getting my hands way to close to the blade.
I was closer than I would like to admit to a serious mishap...
Table saws are dangerous. The dead wood concept is a good thing.

The SRK operations are such a time saver. If you don't have an SRK...get one. This has been such an asset.
